The Mighty Selecter Whips Them Down

The Selecter – “Whip Them Down” mp3

Here’s a lesser known gem from original Two-Tone giants The Selecter. Haven’t lived til you’ve seen this group live, oh my freakin gawd. Pauline Black is an amazing vocalist, and if her onstage energy could be tapped it would solve the energy crisis. Like all the Two-Tone era ska bands, The Selecter was never shy about expressing their politics in song, as in this defiant broadside against racist ignorance and fear. Musically there’s an interesting twist in this track – while most of the song contains their trademark Hammond Organ, a vintage Arp String Ensemble sound pops in at the bridge for an eerie, dark transition between the bouncy and bright choruses. Massive. Pick up a bevvy of their mp3s on the Three Minute Hero collection.

Three Minute Hero

A monster live recording from The Uptones

The Uptones – “East Of A Western Bay”

This instrumental track from The Uptones “Live!! 924 Gilman” CD is a hi-energy ska punk jazz opus. The album influenced a lot of great bands that followed, and it’s a joy to listen to. This was my Sunday morning dance in the kitchen wake up record for a year! Superfan sez pick it up.

The Uptones – “Ridiculous”

Berkeley’s ska nutters The Uptones have a gr8 promo track on Fun Fun Fun Recordings’ “MP3 Jackpot Winners”  compilation. Check out Ridiculous and the whole album, it’s stuffed with power pop goodness, most of it produced by my friend Matthew King Kaufman of Beserkley Records fame.

Bim Skala Bim Skala Bim-@h!

Bim Skala Bim – “Hardest Of The Parts”

Ska from Boston? Boston, MA? Why yes, Dorothy. Stranger things have happened. Bim Skala Bim was in fact, part of a small wave of dedicated American ska bands that formed in the early 80’s, shortly after the two-tone era ended. Along with The Toasters, The Uptones, Fishbone, the Untouchables and a few other notables, Bim brought ska to another generation and opened the road for bands like Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. This one’s for the rude boys and girls. Keep on skankin’. Yeah, you know Superfan is modded up, I may even visit the Ska Shrine one day.
