Radiation City and “The Color of Industry”

Who wouldn’t want to live in Radiation City? Everything glows in the dark, and plants mutate and grow teeth and go all Little Shop Of Horrors when you walk by. It’s a great place to live and find inspiration, as evidenced by this band which takes its name from the fair city. Here’s their single, “The Color of Industry” – hot off the presses from Tender Loving Empire. Although the harmonies nod to Motown and Northern Soul, the production is refreshingly original. Very sweet.

And And And Buys You A Tender Loving Soul

First of all we must acknowledge Tender Loving Empire as a superior name for a record label. It would be a fine name for an album, a song, or a band. And! And. And, it matches this single beautifully. Buy yourself a soul. And be sure to bring the new wave 80’s romantic spaz hi-hat and Farfisa. I love this so terribly much. Thank you, Tender Loving Empire, and And And And. <3

Loch Lomond Sings The Praises Of Elephants & Little Girls

Here’s a great lilting ditty. Just the sort of thing I like to post on a lazy Sunday. I love the string instrumentation and sparse glockenspiel from the start. When the drums kick in, they give the piece an unexpected dynamic lift. The lead vocal has a gr8 unique quality, and the harmonies are exquisite. Think Neil Young sings Alice a lullaby after her first day down the rabbit hole! This earns the coveted classification genre: of “Other.”

Y la Bamba drops LP “Lupon” + single “Juniper”

Y la Bamba – “Juniper” mp3

What if a female Thom Yorke had an epiphany while crossing the border between Mexico and a sort of Disney-fied Catholic heaven in the Salton Sea? You might find it sounds rather like this. A strange and wonderful record by Y la Bamba produced by The Decemberists’ Chris Funk. Mexico native singer-songwriter Luz Elena mined these songs from much travel and adventure in India, New Zealand, California and beyond. She finally landed in Portland, Oregon where she recorded them all. Out this month on the Tender Loving Empire label. Brilliant and courageous work.

Typhoon Starts Over (and over, and over..)

Typhoon – “Starting Over (Bad Habits)” mp3

The metaphor of love relationship as addiction has long been pounded on by self-help books, therapists, and the occasional song lyric. Breaking up is hard to do. Can’t get used to losing you. Might as well face it you’re addicted to love. Here’s another entry into the log of human struggle, to shake that incomparable jones of need for another person. This well constructed and patient reflection by Portland, Oregon’s Typhoon is a  fine study of the tar bar baby of love. They list their genres as Soul / Healing & Easy Listening / Black Metal, and I must say that’s strangely accurate. Original and worthy work, which might even self-help you along. Enjoy.
