Extra Happy Ghost!!!’s Soothingly Stoned “Mercy Mercy”

As SFMusicSluts explained to me, “I’m not advocating the use of drugs but you should listen to this stoned….or tripping.” Now, I would never advocate the advocating of such things, or repeat such a thing but.. oh wait. Did I say that, or just think it? What the hell. Extra Happy Ghost!!! oozes out of Calgary, Canada with their own brand of slithering, Velvet Underground-inspired, carpet-searching drool-bliss. Oh make me stop! Wild tape echo feedback and lush male harmonies complete the opium den rainbow lava lamp picture. Enjoy responsibly.

Mark Davis Eliminates The Toxins

Hmm. What an odd and lovely piece. A self-help and life-coaching book distilled into a warm little indie rock song. Catchy and intriguing. I’m listening a few times, getting a plot line, but also just enjoying the other-ness of this. Very personal, singer-songwriter-y stuff, this is not “Pop” in any known way. But then, these days, what is? Original and brave work from Edmonton’s Mark Davis.

Ryan Bourne – “Love and Death” (play)

I post a lot of great music here, and I love all of it, a lot. But every once in a while I hear a song, and I just have to get up on a soapbox and wave my arms and yell HEY, YOU HAVE TO HEAR THIS! This is the best new love song I have heard in a long while. The lyrics are outstanding. Very contemporary, yet also archetypal and timeless. I know nothing about this artist, and I’m even gonna like, read the bio before posting this. I can do that later. This is just brilliant.

Parkas – “The Gangs All Gone” mp3

Here’s an anthemic rocker from the out of control and marvelous Parkas. These guys rocked live, made some great music and called it quits. Their posthumous record, You Should have Killed Us When You Had The Chance is great. I love the lyrics to this song and the hooks would be at home on a Replacements, Clash or Springsteen record. I generally dislike like the over-flogged term “brutally honest,” but this is some brutally honest work. Bad ass rock with real guts and heart.
