Chester Bay Gets Free. Get “Get Free” Free!

It’s hard to believe it’s been fifteen years since Sublime singer Bradley Nowell died. The album that came out shortly thereafter, became one of the biggest unexpected hits of 1997. It ultimately turned into one of those records that legions of bands use as a directional beacon. One fine quintet who wears a Sublime patch on their sleeve is Chester Bay from Minnesota. Here’s the title track from their album “Get Free.” Good rockin’ alterna-reggae fun.

Charlie Hunter’s latest and greatest

In which we find guitar innovator Charlie Hunter on a loose and chill flight with drummer Eric Kalb and a smart brass section. I’d love to hear the story behind the title of this album – “Gentlemen, I Neglected To Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid” – but it’s not hard to imagine the many comical scenarios where one in the music business might hear those words. I’ve enjoyed Hunter’s playing since the early 80’s, and to this day, he never stops evolving and reaching for new musical horizons more wondrous than the last. In this unhurried, sparse track, you get a sense of the humor and light that have always been a part of Charlie’s art and heart. The legendary chops are but a vehicle. This is an artist who has fun, who loves playing, and that’s why his work is so entertaining.

Charlie Hunter comes home again

Charlie Hunter – “High Pockets and a Fanny Pack”

Charlie Hunter‘s “Home For The Holidays” show at Yoshi’s has become quite the tradition for me in my hometown of Oaksterdam. The event has always been a great success, and this year they’re celebrating its tenth year with a four day run, Dec 18-Dec 20, 2009, featuring special guest Doug Wamble. So to warm up for this fantabulous occasion, I’m posting this bubbly rockin’ jazzy funk track for you’re listening plizeasure. Note the absence of any bass guitar proper, as Charlie manages the top, middle, and bottom of an 8 string slanted fret guitar that was designed for him by fellow Oaklander Ralph Novak. When Hunter gets cooking on that thing, you’ll find yourself looking around the stage asking, where are the rest of the players? A musician, a magician and a mensch, Charlie just keeps getting better with time.
