Bringing Chronic Disorder to “The Drums of War”

Continuing my Posh Boy kick because why not! Glad to see their stuff on IODA, such a great label. Here’s Chronic Disorder from Tacoma, Washington with an epic wail about a classic old theme: old men sending young men to war. Sounding like a collision of U2 and The Doors on this track, these disorderly lads have serious musical and vocal talent, and they play together seamlessly like veterans. Such a hardcore sounding name – Chronic Disorder – but their sound is actually very accessible and even a bit power-pop. I like, I like.

Stepmothers’ “I Dream I’m Innocent” A Lost, Perfect Punk New Wave Gem

In this adventure of mine, in which I try to find one excellent free, legal mp3 to post each day, I’m often blown away by what I find. Whether it’s a new recording hot off the presses, or as in this case, an overlooked gem, I certainly haven’t run out of songs to post. If I do, I’ll stop, that’s my promise! Today isn’t that day. Today I found this amazing, punk-pop new wavey smash from the Stepmothers called “I Dream I’m Innocent.” The lyric is dark and disturbing, yet somehow funny and liberating. The playing is brilliant, the tones and production are brilliant, it’s just a gr8 single. Extra props for the album title “You Were Never My Age.” Heavy rotation, in my innocent dreams.

Pariah Goes On After The End

I am glad to find Pariah on the Interwasteland. In the early 80’s when they started playing in Martinez, the Uptones were starting up a few freeway exits down in Berkeley. I saw a lot of hardcore bands at that time, and these guys were one of my faves. Check this song out, it’s great.

Channel 3 Takes Their Chances Anyway

Here’s a classic piece of 80’s hardcore punk from Channel 3. CH3 was a bit more melodic than a lot of their contemporaries in that scene, but no less raging. I used to hear this on KALX. Always really liked this track, glad to find this and a lot of other 80’s punk classics from the awesome Posh Boy label, now up in the Intertubes.

A Clean Cut American Kid of Ill Repute

Ill Repute – “Clean Cut American Kid” mp3

In a classic piece of early 80’s punk rock, here’s “Clean Cut American Kid” by the perfectly named Ill Repute of sunny Oxnard, CA. Reputedly, they have been ill since 1981, and show no signs of recovery to this day. This anti-anthem was featured by Rodney Bingenheimer on his groundbreaking radio show, and soon became a staple of California hardcore. Closer in tempo and structure to the Ramones and early Clash, this nonetheless displays the more sarcastic attitude favored by SoCal groups of the time like Fear and The Germs. Apart from all that, it’s just a gr8 piece of songwriting, a fun single, and a well captured slice of 1980’s punk rock life.

Agent Orange – “Everything Turns to Grey” mp3

Southern California’s beloved surf punker pioneers Agent Orange have rocked for over three decades, and they continue to tour and deliver a gr8 live show. This song from their brilliant 1981 album “Living in Darkness”- recently re-released digitally by Posh Boy Music – is a good taste of their innovative guitar work and unique collision of power pop, surf and punk. The lyrics to “Everything Turns to Grey” are brilliant, at once idealistic and resigned. A classic song from a classic LP. Surfs up!

Kent State – “Radio Moscow” mp3

One of the cooler regional hits of 1982 was the lo-fi garage punk of “Radio Moscow” by a Southern California band called Kent State (formerly Red Brigade). They played every punk venue on the west coast and then some, adding a twist to American hardcore music that was more Troggs than Sex Pistols. Rodney Bingenheimer played this song heavily on The ROQ, and even made it the lead off track on one of his famed compilation LP’s. The lyrics are such a time capsule – pure cold war angst plus a needed dose of irreverent humor. More yummy goodness from Posh Boy Music.
