Bow wow yippy yay! Behold the harbingers of funky jazz from the early 1970’s, The Headhunters, double dippin’ de fonk with Snoop Dogg & George Clinton (WHAT?!) I said Snoop Dogg & George Clinton, watchoo think I said? George Clinton doesn’t say much minute for minute in this joint, when he speaks it punctuates and reverberates all the way out to the Mothership. Sleep not, lest ye be slept.

Starting the weekend off right with a funky uptempo instrumental from jazz drummer extraordinaire, Mike Clark. Clark got a lot of his chops on Oakland in the early 70’s, before setting out with Herbie Hancock’s band The Headhunters and launching an extensive and prolific recording and touring career. Enjoy this smokin’ track called “T’s Boogaloo,” from his “Carnival of Soul” LP. Oh yeah.

Walking a delicate fine line between straight-ahead and contemporary jazz, we get some great big band writing here by Brent Wallarab, with beautiful ensemble playing to boot! It’s amazing to me how a whole world can be created in a few minutes of instrumental music. Every composition has its own set of rules, like the laws of nature in an imagined universe, in which the players explore and their parts come to life. This piece opens up like a flower to the sunrise and just keeps opening, reaching and expanding. Lovely work.
