Chanting A Psalm With Lee “Scratch” Perry!

It’s my birthday! Happily it coincides with the birth of our nation. When I was a little kid I thought all those fireworks were for me! Ya know whut? I still do! Why not? A wise man once said to me, “the world is as you see it.” So thanks for all the fireworks =) Hmm, what shall I post on my birthday? Lee “Scratch” Perry of course. Inventor of dub and winner of the first Nobel Prize for Positive Vibes. Happy 4th, all! <3

Lee “Scratch” Perry’s illuminating “Psalm”

Lee “Scratch” Perry – “Psalm” mp3

While Lee “Scratch” Perry is a name synonymous with dub, and for that matter every stage of Jamaican music over the last sixty years, I also have a particular appreciation for his vocal style. He’s so funny, and has a way of being reverent and irreverent at the same time. Here we find Madman Scratchy in fine form, chanting a “Psalm” like no other – dropping names and images from popular culture, scriptures, songs, nature, politics and freakin’ comic books – weaving it all into a picture of the world that no one else could conjure. Unique and brilliant.

Dub Is A Weapon – “Leave I & I” (mp3)

One of my fave contemporary dub music artists is Brooklyn’s Dub Is A Weapon. They render dub in its original spirit, but theirs is not a rote interpretation. They have fun with it. The go deep and retrieve exotic dub beasts from underwater sonic chasms. So here ya go – Lee “Scratch” Perry’s top east disciples, with “Leave I and I” featuring the choice vocal stylings of Rob Symeon.

Lee “Scratch” Perry – “Having a Party” mp3

Well known to those who know, mysterious to those who don’t, the greatest dub artist in the world also happens to be the man who invented the style. Dub evolved from various happy accidents in the studios of Jamaica, but it took a madman of Scratchy’s particular imagination to water the seeds of dub and grow them into an international forest. Clearly from outer space, he visits earth in this track to attend a little party. Come on in, drink ya drink.

Lee “Scratch” Perry as Santa Claus

Lee “Scratch” Perry – “Santa Claus”

It seems Lee “Scratch” Perry‘s musical evolution will never stop. Jamaican music innovator number one, Perry has from the early 60’s to the present been a core author of the operating systems for ska, reggae, and dub, spawning myriad sub-genres and altering the perceptions and priorities of generations of fans and musicians world wide. Quite a resume. Now on, like, his ten thousandth LP or something, “madman scratchy” has a new release on the lovely Narnack Records label. This track, a wild riff on Perry’s already wild “Having A Party” which I posted earlier, is closer to a dubby downtempo or house vibe than the Reggae based work he’s most famous for. But the unique voice and mind bending take on life are instantly recognizable as no one else’s. Here’s holiday music of a kind I promise you, you have never heard before. Santa Claus is coming, so catch Scratchy on his short US tour they just announced, and be good!
