The Delicious – “Hokusai” (mp3)

The Delicious – “Hokusai” (play)

Holy clever indie rock Batman! This is like XTC on Ecstasy freaking out and sniffing ground up college radio playlists! A simple pop song this is not. But catchy as hell it is, and if you have a high IQ and energy drinks you’ll keep up just fine! The opposite of a no-brainer, “Hokusai” by The Delicious is a fine composition, expertly and joyously delivered by smart people.

The Delicious – “Suspended In Air”

The Delicious – “Suspended In Air” (play)

I love the name of this week’s MP3Jackpot winner: The Delicious. They hail from Bloomington, Indiana, and their song “Suspended In Air” is just  that. It works in a very unusual way, it hangs there and becomes infectious. Check it out.

The Delicious – “Suspended In Air” (play)

Indie intellectu-rock in a waltz time signature from the feverishly smart Bloomington, Indiana rockers, The Delicious. I agree it’s tasty. Delectable even. “I didn’t mean to imply, an endorsement of utter apathy,” sings our hero, as the music sprawls over every college radio-friendly tiddlybit from the last 25 years. It’s so college radio you could make Neutral Milk Hotel and Pavement out of it if you just add water! But let us not ghettoize this fine work as merely derivative, that would be unfair. There’s an original voice in here, perhaps vexing about the midterms he hasn’t studied for to write this song instead. On the ever-lovin’ Joyful Noise Recordings, I give you “Suspended in Air” by The Delicious. A straight A college rock paper.

Enter Hi Red Center’s Psychedelic Wonderland

Hi Red Center – “Symmetry Chameleon” mp3

Ah the joys of avant-poppe. The effervescent offspring of Yes and King Crimson, Hi Red Center cavorts gleefully amongst flowers that smile and streetlights that sing. It all changes color at every turn, so you have to watch closely, but the more you do the less it stays the same anyway, so you might as well enjoy the ride. “Symmetry Chameleon” by Hi Red Center, my dears. A fine original piece, beautifully realized. I’m all tingly.

Abner Trio – “You’re Gorgeous, Believe It” (play)

Sometimes a bad review from the right person is just what a band needs to help describe their sound in a positive way. Abner Trio boasts proudly on their myspace page that Razorcake HATES us!, and well they should. Ben Snakepit hates them for the very reasons I like them! “‘Thoughtful’ guitars, ‘intelligent’ and clearly enunciated vocals; AAARGH!” says poor Ben. Sounds to me like essence o’ XTC, with nods to Gentle Giant, King Crimson and Sonic Youth. Their label, Joyful Noise Recordings, explains that their new album The Giant Crushes You is available on Vinyl, Cassette, and Digital, but no CDs. How refreshing! A weird and wonderful record from a weird and wonderful band from Indianapolis.
