Cyndi Harvell Photographs A Shining Moment

A photograph, you can take with you; A moment only happens once. Cyndi Harvell’s lyrical snapshots are poetic and sincere. And being an independent singer-songwriter in today’s remnants of a once thriving music industry takes a bit of bottle. The price of gas goes up as venues close, and folks’ entire entertainment budget is Netflix and Ben & Jerry’s. As I write, Cyndi Harvell is on the road, with a band, performing her own songs. I take my hat off to her.

Trevor Childs’ Joyful “Deathwish”

Trevor Childs has a “Deathwish” but it sounds like he’s enjoying it just fine. A comical and amusing jaunt through San Francisco, from this Berkeley troubadour, in which he ponders the exact method of his demise. A couple of approaches might earn him a Darwin Award! This is sort of Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died” only in reverse.

Little Pieces’ “I’m A Bull” Rocks Happy

“I’m a kid and you’re a candy store,” explains Little Pieces in this original power pop treat. Hurling metaphors and guitars into mounds of sugary goodness, the Seattle trio is every bit as talented and clever as they are lighthearted and fun. “I’m a Bull” is but a nibble of this gr8 sounding record, sensitively titled “Vampires Fill Their Waterbeds With Blood.” The single rocks, as does the whole album. You’ll want this one at the ready for sunny days ahead.

Waking Up With A Brontosaurus

I discovered Hey! Brontosaurus last year and have been enjoying their work immensely. Unlike the Clash-inspired funk of their “Backlash” single, “Wake Up” comes more from a more alt-country school. Lyrically, both songs song are brilliantly constructed, and downright inspiring. Thus, Hey Brontosaurus runs the risk of being a band that is important. Their songs can motivate you in fresh and unexpected ways. Which is dangerous, and good.

Riding The “Backlash” with Hey! Brontosaurus

This little ditty is seriously makin’ me shake my stuff. Over an upbeat, poppy sound similar to Blur, the vocals and lyrics hit you like a stun gun. Echos of “Radio Clash” and other 80’s wonderfulness. It’s class war as dance party! And Hey! Brontosaurus is winning.

King Midas in Reverse fills “Space Between Us”

This tune brings me back to the early 90’s with its classic electronica and synthy sound. It’s a fiery, catchy number that has me clapping along and wanting to put on pegged jeans and black eyeliner. Check it.

These Aren’t Your Daddy’s Golden Arches

Nothing like a toe-tappin’, country back woods number on a lazy Sunday. But far from the standard Nashville lyrical fare, this spry acoustic number evokes the paradoxes of America in 2010. A nice unusual tempo shift helps propel the story, like a beat up muscle car speeding across state lines at the height of summer.

Sharing a nice Terrified moment with Trevor Childs

Here’s a gr8 postmodern lullaby of sorts from Berkeley, CA’s Trevor Childs. Sounds like it could have come straight out of the Motown studio, if same were occupied by angst-ridden college radio addicted indie rockers. Almost like a sweet, lilting love song but the lyrics bring an interesting twist. Sweet, sentimental and darkly hilarious.
