This is Wicked

Recorded and released in 1999, Operator Burstup’s husky beats and brawny basslines took their cue from UK drum n’ bass, and turned the ears of many of dubstep’s most influential producers. “Wicked” starts with now iconic “Funky Worm” sample by the Ohio Players, and the next four minutes is like climbing in the ring with the Heavyweight Champion of basslines.

Mekanikles – “Shifty”

Mekanikles’ single “Shifty” shows his love for all forms of bass music. From dubstep to wobbly house, Mekanikles is a fan first, producer second, and it shines all over this track.

The Roots of Dubstep

This week current beat king Diplo released “The Roots of Dubstep,” a mix compilation of- you guessed it – songs that have influenced current dubstep production. Get a little taste of what’s on the album with “U Don’t Like Me (Datsik Remix),” a modern bass music killer with current dubstep beat champ Dastik on the remix. I don’t know about you but this is totally the kind of music I want to hear when I’m tearing up the dancefloor.

Mimosa – “Pushing Little Daisies”

Mimosa is on fire right now. When he’s not touring with Pretty Lights, he’s in the studio pushing sonic boundaries and releasing music at a furious pace. He’s latest full-length, Silver Lining, is another notch in the electronic-music headboard, solidifying Mimosa’s spot as a contemporary bass music taste maker.

Ol Dirty Bastard – “Brooklyn Zoo (Hulkstep Remix)” (play/download)

You know what sucks? The fact that ODB’s “Brooklyn Zoo” album has been out of print for years. You can’t even stream that shit on MOG. But today we get reparations in the form of a grimy/filthy/slimy remix by Chicago’s bass driven team, Hulk. This remix mirrors ODB’s personality to a tee — and you got to love the ODB.

Bassnectar’s Massive Attack remix

Risingson” was Massive Attack’s break thru 1998 hit, although the crew had been making the kind of music we call “trip-hop” today for over a decade. Don’t be fooled by this deceptive lil remix; It starts off sounding like everything is on the up-and-up, until Bassnectar pulls out the bass and wipes it like a dirty sanchez across the upper lip of this track.

Get your fist in the air

I wish Tim Ismag was making this kind of music when I was in junior high school. I lived in LA, and my friend had a low rider – a real sick one. It looked like it came off the cover of Low Rider Magazine, minus the Latin girl in a bikini. “Get the Party Started (feat. Prolific)” has that perfect blend of hip-hop lyrics over dirty beats that would have accentuated how cool we thought we where back then.

Cold As Ice re-dub

I usually hate it when artists take a nostalgic pop tune from the eighties, that wasn’t even good back then, and try to turn them into dance-floor killers. Plus Foreigner is the worst; they make Boston look like The Beatles. Even with all that stacked against them, Specimen A manages to revive “Cold As Ice” from cheesy-arena rock into a dance-floor filler. Trust me, in 1 minute in you’re going to want to put your lighter in the air.

Badman sound

Doctor P – “Badman Sound” (play/download)

Dubstep’s hold as the bass music of choice in the world isn’t showing signs of letting up as long as artists like Doctor P are releasing records. Signed to Circus records, Dr. P’s “Badman Sound” is his first ‘hit’ and was featured on various bass DJs playlists. This one is quick to grab your attention as Dr. P wastes zero time dropping the grimy elements of bass music right from the start. Definitely going down as one of my favorite tracks of the year.
