Smoking Popes, “Wish We Were”

I’m truly a sucker for unrequited love and guitars. This week’s MP3 Jackpot winner “Wish We Were”  by the Smoking Popes is just that. So grab one solid pop song done well.

Smoking Popes Only “Wish We Were”

Shannon Wheeler’s comic book hero Too Much Coffee Man once said, “unrequited love is like hitting your head against a wall that isn’t there.” Power poppers the Smoking Popes‘ brand new album opens with a smashing single that beats its head vigorously against that wall. A gr8 new take on an ancient theme, with lyrics that can only have been written by someone trying, however futilely, to stop wishing, this song hurts so good.

Attending A Sectional With Santa Cruz’s Huxtables

I saw The Huxtables in Santa Cruz, CA in the mid 90’s, when they were a side project of 3rd wave ska faves Slow Gherkin. They were fun then and they’re fun now. Here is the first track from their long awaited first album. Power poppy punky silly goodness!

Matt Skiba – “S.O.S.”

Matt Skiba – “S.O.S.”

I saw Matt’s band Alkaline Trio on this year’s warped tour.  Matt Skiba has put together a series of home demos he made of his songs, and Asian Man Records has released them. Matt’s “S.O.S.” is this week’s MP3 Jackpot winner. I love songwriter demos. It’s so interesting to listen to a songwriter giving birth to a song.

Asian Man Records is about to release a collection of home demos by Alkaline Trio‘s Matt Skiba. This is the promo single from the collection, and I like it a lot. It’s a minimal rendering of a complete new song, with that sense of wonder and discovery in the voice that make some songwriter demos very special. This is sweet. If you haven’t heard Alkaline Trio’s full-on power pop emo sound, you can catch them on the Warped Tour, like, now.

Kepi Ghoulie Tells Your Fortune

Kepi Ghoulie – “Fortune Teller” mp3

From chief Groovy Ghoulie Kepi himself, comes this tasty bite of bubble-punk therapy. Sounds like the Ramones went in a time machine to visit Brian Wilson in the early 60’s and tell him everything is OK! If punk-pop is all grow’d up, and needs a self-help plan, this could be it. Don’t blink twice, though. In the best tradition of punky power pop songs, this little gem is over before it starts. Nice one from Monte Sereno, CA’s beloved Asian Man Records.

For the Win – “Another Day” mp3

New to the ever growing stable of brilliant labels in the IODA camp is Asian Man Records, the indie pop punk ska and whatnot imprint founded by Skankin’ Pickle’s Mike Park. Typical of their signings is For.The.Win out of the label’s own backyard, San Jose, California. Musically belligerent and lyrically hopeful, at once idealistic and ferocious, this is punk rock by people who never got the memos that said “punk is dead” or “punk is mainstream now” or “punk ended when Green Day got big.” As with the blues, rock n’ roll, or any other genre, the heart of punk beats strong as long as there are bands and fans who believe it. Download and punk out.
