Goonies Never Say Die – “Nothing Remains Forever Yet The Future Still Holds Hope” mp3

Here’s a truly epic classical rawk awe-pera from Goonies Never Say Die. GNSD are a band of Blackpool, UK instrumentalists who kick Satan’s arse from Jimi Page’s mansion to the fiery depths of Mordor. Giant performances of meticulously arranged, original pieces of post-rock apocalysm flow from this sextet like it were easy. Goonies Never Say Die, ladies and gents. Best band name in a while, best instrumental prog-meets-Beethoven, evar.

The Sword – “Tres Brujas” mp3

Loving them some Led Zep and southern rawk and yes some ‘tallica, riffmonsters The Sword plunge a mighty metal slab into the quivering flesh of prog rock. Yes. And these are GR8 lyrics, I mean, this is exactly what bombastic bong-ripping songs should be all about. I had to listen again to make sure, but he really does say “three witches you shall meet, along the road to your fate..” Hence the title, “Tres Brujas.” We are not worthy.

Before heavy metal was called “metal” and got all speeded up, it sounded heavy – like great shards of metal colliding and melting together in the sky. Loving Thunder‘s music is like that. This sonically massive title track from their “Photographing the Wild” album is a stunner. Very Seattle in the guitar department. There’s still something in the water there which makes electric guitars sound more beastly and immense. The drums and riffs are more Zep than Nirvana, and the vocal is delivered in a beautifully creepy octave harmony like monks gone to the dark side. A quote on their myspace says simply, “The future, as envisioned by teenage stoners, in the 70′s.” Pretty f00kin accurate.
