Vassily Primakov Plays Mozart

Young Moscow born pianist Vassily Primakov is quite the rising star in the US and on the world classical stage. Here’s a live recording with the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark, expertly conducted by American Scott Yoo. This is the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, an epic piece of great humor and wit, plus an air of impending tragedy. Primakov’s approach is pure and direct – this is not a player who puts himself in front of the composition. Rather he gets on it, goes where it leads, and enjoys the ride. It’s a joy to listen to a work like this played so naturally and vitally. Super clean recording, too. The whole marvelous concert is available from the iTunewebs.

The World Series always makes me think of Ed Meeker and his classic song “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” on Edison recordings. What a chorus! Next year is this songs 100th anniversary. People everywhere still sing it. Now that’s popular music! This version is ripped from a 78 RPM recording, but the quality and gusto of Ed’s voice resonates magnificently. Remember: “One, Two, Strikes, You’re Out at the Old Ball Game.” Go Giants!

Enrico Caruso – “Over There” (mp3)

There may not have been Twitter and social media during the early 1900s; however, some musicians were ahead of their time when it came to innovative marketing. Enrico Caruso Рthe thunderous Italian tenor — can attribute much of his success to being a marketing pioneer when it came to recording his live performances, being a part of the first radio broadcast in 1910, and being in some of the first motion pictures. Enrico’s bravado is heard loud and clear in this lively recording of George M. Cohan’s Over There, affectionately and commonly referred to as: Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Carly Comando – “Cordelias Lullaby” mp3

‘Nuther chill instrumental for this Sunday’s selection. It’s just how I’m rolling this weekend. Carly Comando (her real name) records solo piano improvisations for the Deep Elm label. Comando is best known for her ballad, “Everyday,” the soundtrack to Noah takes a photo of himself every day for 6 years, which has been viewed in excess of a bazillion times. The piece has more recently served as the score to Amnesty International’s “Death to the Death Penalty” ad campaign. These beautiful works are structured more like compositions than your typical “improv” – they have movements, passages, they develop, build tension and resolve, like any written piece. She just makes them up as she plays them. Peaceful music, my offering for today.

The Choir of Durham Cathedral – “O Come, All Ye Faithful”

Here’s a lovely choral rendition of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” by The Choir of Durham Cathedral in Durham, England. A little traditional for me? Well, I am full of surprises. And I hope your holiday is, too! Merry Christmas everyone.
